Sault Lavender Fields: a more authentic side of Provence
Discover a quieter, more authentic side of Provence — where lavender fields, hilltop villages, and later summer bloom create a very special experience.
When most people think of lavender in Provence, they picture Valensole — vast purple landscapes, long geometric rows, and some of the most photographed fields in the world. But there is another side of lavender season in Provence, and it feels very different.
Around the Plateau d’Albion and Sault, the landscape becomes quieter, more intimate, and more varied. Instead of one grand panorama after another, you find a collection of smaller fields, winding roads, open views, stone villages, and changing scenery that gives this part of Provence its own rhythm. This is what makes the area so special.
What is the Plateau d’Albion?
The Plateau d’Albion is one of those places that feels wide and open, yet never empty. It is a high plateau where lavender fields appear between roads, hills, woods, and villages, each one with a slightly different atmosphere.
What makes it especially beautiful is the diversity of the landscape. One field may feel hidden and quiet, another open and expansive, another framed by trees or distant hills. Rather than offering one single iconic view, the plateau offers a series of changing impressions — softer, more local, and often more personal.
For anyone looking for lavender fields in Provence beyond the most obvious postcard scenery, this area has a lot of charm.
Why Sault is so special
At the heart of this landscape is Sault, a village closely associated with lavender season in Provence.
Sault has a different energy from the better-known lavender destinations. It feels more rural, more grounded, and less polished in the tourist sense. The beauty here is not only in the fields themselves, but in everything around them: the roads, the altitude, the dry summer light, the village atmosphere, and the sense of being in a real agricultural landscape rather than in a place designed only to be photographed.
Sault and Plateau d’Albion vs Valensole
Valensole is famous for scale. It is dramatic, instantly recognizable, and visually spectacular. If you want the most iconic lavender views, that is often the first place people think of.
Sault and the Plateau d’Albion offer something else.
Here, lavender feels more woven into the land. The fields are often smaller, but also more varied. The scenery changes more from one stop to another. Instead of a single monumental impression, the experience feels layered: village, countryside, road, light, horizon, field.
There is also a seasonal difference that matters.
Because Sault lies higher than Valensole, the lavender season there usually moves a little later. That means the fields around Sault are often cut later as well, which makes this area especially interesting for travelers hoping to catch lavender in bloom after some lower parts of Provence are already moving toward harvest.
For photography, this is one of the reasons Sault can be such a beautiful choice.
Practical tips for visiting Sault during lavender season
If you are planning to visit the Sault lavender fields, I highly recommend having a car. The beauty of this area is not concentrated in one single spot — it unfolds through the roads, the smaller fields, and the different landscapes around Sault and the Plateau d’Albion.
Early morning and late afternoon are usually the most beautiful moments of the day, especially in summer when the light becomes softer and the atmosphere feels calmer.
Bring water, sun protection, and comfortable shoes. Summer in Provence can be very hot, especially in open countryside.
If you are planning your trip around photography, the most beautiful moment in Sault is often around July 5 to July 15, when the fields can look especially fresh and photogenic. Do not wait too long if you want a session there. The most beautiful period is short, and my shooting window in Sault is also limited.
And of course, respect the fields. Lavender is not only beautiful — it is part of the life and work of the region.

The photographs throughout this page were taken during real sessions in Sault and are meant to show what this area can look like through the camera — not in theory, but in reality.
One of those sessions was especially memorable: two friends traveled from the United States to meet me for a photoshoot in Sault. We spent time moving through the fields, working with different outfits and different light, and created a series of images that felt elegant, feminine, and deeply connected to the landscape around us.
That is what makes a lavender photoshoot in Sault so special.
It is not only about purple fields. It is about atmosphere, movement, styling, light, and the feeling of being in Provence at a very particular moment of summer.
Because this period is short, sessions in Sault are best planned in advance.
